In the past, Korea's scientific community has been hesitant to engage with creationists, afraid that doing so could boost the credibility of the group. The silence is no longer an alternative.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process by which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" originates from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. The YECs are the best known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs are less well known, but they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." This theory states that God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and 에볼루션 코리아 has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. The reasons for this aren't entirely certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
