In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly in the case of an Bosch model like ours. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues with your vehicle.
