How to Replace an Replacement Audi a4 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly in the case of the Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous problems in your car.
