David Letterman's audience hurls BOOS at liberal comedian Bill Maher after he cracks George Zimmerman jokes

HBO's resident left-wing comic Bill Maher drew disapproval from late night host David Letterman's audience on Tuesday after he told a pair of jokes mocking George Zimmerman in the wake of his acquittal for the shooting death of black teenager Trayvon Martin.

Maher was in New York City to watch the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

When Letterman mentioned that Maher was among the owners of the New York Mets, whose stadium hosted the annual mid-season classic, Maher noted that he was only a 'minority owner.'

Which is 'better than being a minority in Florida,' the comedian quipped .

'Why are they booing?' he asked moments later as the crowd turned against him.

George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin on self-defense grounds, but liberal activists and politicians have continued to use his case as the basis for arguments about race in America

More catcalls came minutes later when Maher complained that under Florida law, Zimmerman's firearm - which he used to kill Martin in self-defense - would be returned to him.

'You know that they want to give George Zimmerman a gun now?' an incredulous Maher asked.

'The Florida state law is that he can get his gun back. I say that if he gets a gun, Casey Anthony gets a baby.'

Maher added more jabs taunting politically conservative TV watchers, at one point calling Republicans 'drama queens' for their outrage over a host of scandals facing President Barack Obama's administration.

'I wish Obama had transformed America,' Maher offered. 'He has not.'

'When they say, you know, "Oh, he's the most radical president ever," I think what they mean is, "He's black."'

'I remember Ted Nugent, during the election,' Maher recalled, 'said that "if Obama wins, this time next year I will either be dead or in jail" -- which I call a win-win.'

'And we're waiting, Ted.'

Maher hosts 'Real Time With Bill Maher' on HBO, and has used his national platform to disarm conservatives with humor that often divides Americans along party lines

Of the week's baseball festivities, Maher told Letterman that he especially enjoyed the Home Run Derby, despite the steroid scandals that have made many fans wonder if the event's champions were winging their bats honestly.

'It was great to see these 'roided-up monsters hit it into row triple-Z,' he said. 'And the Levitra sign lights up.'

Baseball, Letterman observed, 'really is a game of inches.'

'Yeah, it really is,' Maher replied. 'Much like the Levitra sign.'
