Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

SEAT-Logo-2019.jpgYesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor audi keys replacement (G28). 5. Tachometer
