This was the perfect environment for writing and learning more about myself as an artist and writer. The non-competitive, motivating structure of the retreat felt just right-a balance of solitary writing, one-on-one conversation, and group critique that empowered me to meet my writing goals and surpass them. The group was so varied and talented - and willing to share. Share your stories, experiences, and insights to connect with other beauty, lifestyle, and health enthusiasts. He competes in powerlifting and has recently taken up longer distance running, played football and baseball in college, successfully completed one mountaineering trip (barely), Shoe Dog by Phil Knight (a memoir about Nike) is his all-time favorite book and captures his own ethos, and few things get him as excited as presenting to groups of people eager to learn about the science of pain and talking about future tech and its integration with health. Check out the infographic below for a few yoga poses you can try for a herniated disc.

Some people can see improvement within a few days, while it might take weeks for others. People who exercise improper lifting techniques can also experience pain in the back. When I’m working with a client who is a good candidate for physical therapy and isn’t a surgical candidate it’s important to test out several different movements in order to see which one works best for you. It is probably the most beautiful place I have been in- it was lush and green and had tons of little places to hide out and write (although taking my cafe culture with me from SF, I did tend to stay in the restaurant). Some people are sensitive to flexion and extension, so, adding in a rotational movement can sometimes be the one that provides a little relief. For people who are flexion intolerant, this movement usually feels pretty good. I picked these terms up from Dr. Stuart McGill, who knows a thing or two about spines.

Flexion intolerance of the spine means that you have a lot of pain when you bend forward through your spine. Avoid poses, such as the child’s pose, sage’s pose, and forward bends. It’s the same premise as the child’s pose. Child’s pose is a great exercise to perform (yes, even if you have a herniated disc), if you are unable to bend backwards, also known as extension intolerance. The prone press up is a great exercise to help increase you’re spinal extension. Seated Spinal Twist: Sitting with extended legs, a person should bend their right knee up. And if you’re also a massage type of person you’ll want to read this article about whether or not massages can make disc herniations worse. This is more common in Type 2 diabetes and in older adults. Similar to the prone press up, the "cobra," a popular yoga move, is the next, more intense progression. With these next several exercises we are getting more into general strength training exercises that when completed with proper progression are a great way to rehab you back injury while also building up back and leg strength.
