How to Replace an audi a3 key fob replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Peugeot-2021-New-Black.pngIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or audi a3 spare key my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection cost of audi key replacement ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly in the case of an Bosch model, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of the audi key shell's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. When this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points. This is a typical component across the Audi Key Replacement Cost Uk 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
