Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a tour around the world to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
