How to Replace an audi car key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The audi car key cover will start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). 4. ECU

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. 5. Tachometer
