How to Replace an audi q3 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. 5. Tachometer
