A communication board, built on the Uno form factor, sends application requests to the DSU to allow it to perform a specific stimulation sequence. The CU then initiates the local operating mode by sending a configuration request to the DSU which specifies a default pulse pattern, pulse amplitude and pulse width.

The DSU then activates the corresponding pulse patterns for each channel. The next step is a measurement of the current output at the shunt resistor on the DSU to verify that not more than the set limit was delivered. This security feature makes sure that the DSU will not deliver more current than it is required to, which is important for human-subjects protection reasons.
