How to Replace an audi advance key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and audi key shell tt key replacement (hjinterior.kr) the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi etron key because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. If this sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
