Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

When you are deciding on the perfect double buggy, there are many things to consider. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options and age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

What kind of buggy do you want?

Double buggys are ideal for transporting up to two children at a time even if they're not the same age. They can also be used as prams and have recline mechanisms in each seat, so your children can lay down in various positions. They're often spacious enough to store everything from drinks and snacks to wipes and nappies. They are usually light they fold easily and are small enough to fit in your car boot. If you drive a lot it's important to make sure the buggy's ease of use using the folded wheels, as well as to get it in and out of your car boot.

The most well-known type of double buggy is the side-by-side, which you've likely seen on other moms' pushchairs or even rode in as a child yourself. They are ideal for older siblings that want to keep up with you or for twins and typically have a large number of seating options (including 'cinema' seats) for your toddlers to choose from. They are usually simple to steer, and if you opt for a model with a soft suspension, they can easily handle the kerbs.

Tandem buggies, which are easier to turn than side-by sides, are also very popular. The second seat is placed behind the first and not on top. The seats are usually larger and heavier than a side-by-side and you must ensure whether they are able to pass through doors or on public transport. They can be used for twins or a toddler and a baby or three children with the addition of a buggy.

Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They're generally more expensive than side by sides or tandem buggies, but they offer a lot of flexibility and have a great resale value. They're generally simple to steer, feature large storage bins and can handle uneven surfaces. Some have a built in ride-on board for children older than and 'cinema chairs'.

Do you have twins?

Double buggys are the best way to transport your children, whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two primary types of double buggy: side-by-side buggies in which your children sit side by side and tandem buggies in which one baby is above the other. Both buggies are able to accommodate two fixed seats. However, side-by-side buggies are narrower to fit through doors. Tandems are generally wider overall. They can also accommodate both a toddler seat and a carrycot.

Do you have a child?

Having a younger sibling can be a big responsibility initially, particularly when you must tend to the infant. They may be a bit irritated when they are in a baby carrier while you push the older one ahead and having a double buggy from the start can make everything simpler. It will also give your child the feeling of pride that comes with knowing that they are able to be 'big brother or sister' and help them get used to their role.

Double buggies that are side-by-side by side double stroller are often considered to be the best choice for twins as they allow both children to have the same view, however they can be hefty and heavy.
