Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A lightweight double pushchair makes it easy to move around, especially for families with children of various ages. They're generally easy to steer, fold and carry up and down the stairs.

Side-by-Side

The majority of the light double pushchairs we tested were side-by-side models. These are the best for children who can stand up without assistance, as they lack car seat compatibility. However, the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double push chair are both excellent options that offer recline that can be adjusted in both seats, a large canopy and padded 5-point harnesses. These are also easy to move around despite their bigger footprint. They are ideal for parents who are worried about fitting through doors.

It is able to fit through doors that are standard and is easy to maneuver on public transportation. Another excellent side-by-side lightweight double is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, that offers more flexibility and customization thanks to its modular frame. It's a great option for families with growing children, and the UPPAbaby also makes one of the tiniest and most fashionable umbrella strollers available.

Side-by-side pushchairs that are lightweight aren't foolproof, though -when your children are of the same age or stage they might be fighting over who gets to ride in which seat. And if they're taller than each other, a tandem model could be better for them, as it will allow them to face each other.

Tandem

While side-by-side models are best suited to siblings of the same age group, tandem light double strollers come with their own charms. Tandem pushchairs that are lightweight typically make tighter turns than side-by-side models, however they are more difficult to drive over uneven surfaces and curbs. They are also a little slower to pick up speed and can be heavier to move, which could cause strain on your back.

Another option is a convertible double buggy that starts out as an individual and then you add adapters to turn it into a double. It can have a second seat or carrycot in the front or the kids can be seated side-byside. Some can also consider including a buggyboard that can help an older child keep pace with siblings who are younger.

However the suspension and wheels on these types of strollers generally do a good job of coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're usually significantly lighter than the side-by-sides, means you still have a decent amount of storage space. It's worth bearing in mind that these types of strollers aren't as efficient in getting through narrow aisles in supermarkets and aren't able to handle a lot of shopping. It's a bit easier to turn around on the smallest of curved paths, but it can be difficult to turn them around on a straight path. Some are easier to turn than others models, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or the Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.

Convertible

The great thing about convertible double pushchairs is the ability to adapt to a family's changing needs.
