Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight spaces.

For a smooth ride, opt for a pram fitted with air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with 360deg front swivel wheels. However, they are susceptible to punctures, so make sure you are prepared with a repair kit.

Sturdy frame

New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies, that symbol of the decade that were more expensive than common sense, are in rapid decline. They are being replaced by four-wheelers that are able to be more versatile in terrain, yet still look swanky and being easy to push.

The rule is that the bigger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front enable you to move and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested this buggy with a newborn baby as well as a child who was 3 years old and found it extremely durable. It was able to handle cobbles, grass and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. She noted that it was solid to push, and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require occasionally pumping) come with suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my kids.

The size and shape of the seat is another thing to think about. You'll want it to be big enough for your child's comfort and you will also need it to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat that lets your child face you, while other buggies only allow a face-to-parent one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and walking in muddy areas. The buggy can be used as a single from birth and then adapts to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers from age four and includes a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and large cushioned seat unit. Storage options are also a plus with a large basket with zip pockets on the hood, and an attractive pouch at the rear of seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels will give your buggy greater stability when driving over rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies that are off-road. They also allow you to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have rotating wheels on the front, which assist you in navigating tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock for greater speed and stability. This is particularly useful when you bump against trees or a kerb. The front wheel will lift slightly to prevent hitting it.

Many 3 wheeled buggies wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres which allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They are also lighter. They are more prone to punctures, and you'll need to have a repair kit and spare inner tube in your arsenal.

Some of our favourite 3 wheel stroller travel system-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which she claims "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles", and can easily go up or down kerbs. They also come with a suspension system that according to her "smoothes out bumps very effectively".

Buggies with larger wheels may be quite wide and can be difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is problematic if you intend to use it as a jogger or you need to get through doorways that are narrow when out and about. Many models have small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.

Easy to manoeuvre

One of the main benefits to a three-wheeled buggy is that it can be much easier to maneuver particularly with a child on the way. The way in which they are built ensures that the front wheels spin at a whim and are extremely easy to maneuver, making them ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles or bumpy pavements, as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she reported: "The Terrain is a delight to navigate on rough terrain. The swivel wheel front was particularly useful." I was also impressed with how well it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it to be extremely stable when driving downhill or over uneven terrain."

The only downside to this incredible maneuverability is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel buggy can sometimes make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something you need to be aware of if your home area is one of the cities. If this is a concern, a 4-wheel buggy might be better for you.
